Possibility of pre-optimal breeding conditions - suggestions?

cataphract May 24, 2004 10:54 PM

Alright, so i've got 3 very healthy cresteds, about 7-8 months old, and one of them recently "gained" his hemipenal bulges. The other two are still premature/female. I don't have 2 cages, so i can't seperate them - what do i do if i find that the male has mated with one of the females, while she is under optimal size ([Anthony] says 35 grams). Crickets more often? Increased calcium vitamin supplemation? Will she need an isolation tank for "birthing" anyway, and should i just get it now as a preventative measure? I don't know what to do!

On a side note, i have "Herptevite Multi-Vitamin" as well as "Calcium Supplement" but the multi vitamin is expired. Anyone have information as to the affects of expiration of vitamin supplements? I haven't been using it, but it was 25$ (CDN) and i'd rather be able to use it rather than buy a new container.

PS - The multi-vitamin was 1 month left until due date when i bought it, but i didn't notice until like 2 months later because the stupid xpiration is on the bottom. The pet store wouldn't re-emburse me because i didn't have a receipt! 1 month till expiration! isn't that BS?

If the female breeds too early she can (not always but is possible) become egg bound and die if not taken care of. It puts alot of stress on her body and is not good for her health if she lives through it. Get a cage and put the known male in it. Why take the chance. As for the vitamins they are not as potant, same as human vitamins.

If there was something you could feed them to make it OK to breed a female early, I wouldn't tell people to wait until they're 35 grams. Personally, I don't think it's worth taking the chance of stunting a female's growth and productivity for life, just so I don't have to spend the $5 for a rubbermaid container.

If your supplements are expired by only a couple of months, they'll be fine.

I've taken your advice, because after hearing so much about you and browsing you site, i know that your word holds a lot of experience. Basically I'm trying to say thank you.

I moved the male to a small 7ish gallon tank with his own plants and decore, and gave him some food, but three days later he hasn't eaten anything, and hasn't moved around too much, if at all. Should i put his tank right next to the other tank for stimulation or is that a stupid idea? Is there anything i can do or should i hand feed him until he feels more calm?

I hate to see him lonely.
