Problem with left eye???....tristis orientalis.................anyone please give opinion

Uas May 25, 2004 03:04 AM

HI.

My t. orientalis female has kept her left eye closed for the past 2 days. The eye looks a little swelled up, but I have tjecked, and it does not seem to be infected, as the is no redness.

What I have done is as following:

I have moistened the eye with a little bit of saltwater, to help prevent any drying out.

I know it is hard to give edvice, when you have not seen the animal IRL.

My theory is this: She has maybe got a little piece of sand stuck in her eye, which is irretating her.

Has anyone experienced anything similar?

Frank? Bob?

Rasmus

Hey rasmus,

I have never experienced anything like you have described. Perhaps she got some sand or other debris lodged in there. Perhaps several daily mistings may help it clear up? Does she have any mucous around the mouth or nostrils? Sometimes a respiratory ailment may cause the eyes to get crusty and close shut. I don't have the slightest clue... If it doesn't appear to be infected, I wouldn't worry about it for now; maybe try misting the cage to increase humidity...and see how that goes. It can't hurt....

On a side note; a couple of months ago, I noticed that my male macraei was favoring one of his eyes, keeping it closed for long periods of time.. One day while cleaning their enclosure, I was able to approach him, which was very odd, for he would normally run away when he saw me. I then realized that he is blind in the one eye that he was favoring.. I guess it doesn't seem to bother him; he has no other health complications, and has even been breeding my female. He has since stopped holding his eye closed, but still lacks the eyesight from that eye... If his eye ever becomes infected, or abnormal, depending on its severity, I would probably take him to the vet... This doesn't seem the case with your girl..

If it doesn't appear to be infected, I would give it time, and perhaps the increased humidity would help it open back up..

This is by no means what you should do...for I have not physically seen your animal, nor have I ever experienced something like that...If it was in my collection, I would probably do the misting thing... so I guess you can take this for whatever its worth... Take care,

bob

Lack of redness does not mean there is not an infection.

No redness here (other than his pretty pink and purple skin), but there was an infection, it cleared up in a couple days with treatment. It was probably caused by a claw or tooth, as this pair were having discussions when this showed up. I wouldn't doubt that sand (especially store bought stuff) could scratch the eye and lead to a small infection too.

Personally I don't see a downside to seeing a qualified vet and being sure... That is what I would do.

Hi Bob and Robert.

Thanks for the reply.

I had called my vet before I wrote the post, but I thought I would tjeck if any of you guys had experienced anything like it.

I will be meeting with her tomorrow.

This t. orientalis female has caused me so much trouble, and has already cost me $800 for the animal, 600$ for an operation 2 month ago, collapsed cloaca, and no w this.
She better become a good breeding female.
But it had been so hard for me to find a single female, so I really hope she will be succesfull in breeding.

I shal tell you what happens at the vet tomorrow.

Thank though.

Regards
Rasmus

I went to the meet the vet today.
And she just confirmed what I thougt.

maybe a piece of sand, or the nail from the male skratched her eye.
I got some lotion that I need to put in her eye 2 pr. day.

So let´s hope it will heal up fast.

Rasmus
