New eggs...

LCGeckos May 25, 2004 07:15 AM

Okay, we were blessed with 19 eggs last night. They are set up in 5 deli containers in a hovabator. The temp is right around 85 degrees, but what should the humidity be kept at? How often should I add water? Is putting the thermometer that came with the hovabator accurate enough to keep my temps right??

The thermometer that comes with the hovabator isn't accurate. Use a digital one and stick the probe in to the substrate.
Here's my scientific way of gaging the humidity.
Set deli lids on top of the eggs, not snapped down. If condensation forms on the lids it's ok. If it forms enough to start dripping, then offset the lid to allow more airflow.
Add water by feeling the substrate. If water is needed, drop it in with a dropper or syringe, avoiding the eggs.
You might want to turn the hovabator down a couple degrees, only because your temp is at the maximum and doesn't allow for any fluctuation.
Good Luck
