If you feed your mice thru 1/4 inch hardware cloth, do you need a weight of some sort on top of food? n/p

The weight of the food piled up will be just fine. When the food is down to a single layer, they will push the pieces around while trying to nibble. Keep the food in a small area over the screen. Use some extra hardware cloth to make a cylinder or use wood as a divider or make a square food retainer from 1x2 or 1x3.
