grass seed

SeaStar427 May 25, 2004 03:45 PM

Hi! I have a big pen i my backyard for three Eastern Box turtles. I originally had grass in there, but it has since died over the winter(I'm not sure why) and I wanted to put grass seed down. However, I don't know if any types of grass seed can harm box turtles if they ingest it, and don't want to take any unnecessary risks. Can anyone tell me if they have had any experiences with this, an any grass seed that they have used without any problems? Thanks in advance!
Caroline

I have used grass seed in my eastern pen w/out any problems. Maybe your grass didn't come up this spring cause it was annual rye? Just a thought.

While your still talking grass, how do you cut it in the pen? Mainly in the later part of the year, incase babies are in there and you don't see them. I plan to look for the eggs and incubate them. But I have missed eggs before and I would prob. never weed eat again if i kille a baby. As for now I can safely weed eat the grass down after removing the turtles out of the pen. I use bermuda. what do you guys/gals use?

I dont see why you'd want to cut it.. if it gets tall the turtles will plow it down, you could try removing the grass and replacing it with a more natural looking clover.. or pulling some of the grass out and planting clover

Well, I thought nothing about clover. I thought I thought thru everything but I guess not. Thanx. I'll probably do that. So far they are not plowing it over. It is pretty think to.

Justin,
I have found that my 3toeds love monkey grass. It is hearty, stays green year around and they just love hiding in it. I even planted some in my indoor turtle's terrarium. Just a thought.
