Quelling ignorance and irrational fear...

Chris Olson May 25, 2004 05:59 PM

Should be one the goals of our hobby as a collective. People making ridiculous statements about aquiring diseases from reptiles feeds a fire that doesn't need anymore fuel.

It is this fire that prevents us from shipping our animals legally. It is the unreasonable misconceptions about reptiles that keeps us from getting home owners insurance. It is assumtion without a grounding in reality that has countless groups all over the country trying to shut down the reptile industry. There are people who would say, "who cares what they say on the Food Network?" Well, if you're a reptile hobbyist and you need that question answered, you better start thinking about the future.

No one has shown the statement to be true or not.

Fred Albury May 25, 2004 09:59 PM

Teue, no one has shown that statement to be true, but the PERCEPTION of the public is of paramount importance. Through the power of mere suggestion, people spread lies and halftruths as if they were the truth written in a gospel(Chose one) This individual doing this isnt ok, but in a world of people that have irrational fears, you cant stop them all, but you can sure as ---- try. After all, some of us believed in this war because of falsely spread irrational lies. SEE how well it works?

Yup yup

Also.....it does make shipping harder and up to the individual irrational fears of the person that is charge of shipping your animal, if they cant deal with it, it doesnt go. PATHETIC eh?

*Cheers*

www.salmonella.org/info.html - "Most infections with Salmonella are traced back to dairy, poultry and meat products, but Salmonella can grow on just about any food. Chickens and eggs are particular high risk foods."

www.icomm.ca/~dragon/salmonella.htm - "While many reptiles do carry one form or another of salmonella please keep in mind that if you take the proper precautions the chances of a healthy adult becoming ill with salmonella from a reptile will be very low. It would be much easier to get a salmonella infection from poorly cooked or prepared eggs or chicken."

This is a CDC link. They have additional information at there site. For those of you questioning the validity of the statement here it is. Check it out for yourself.

I couldn't find an answer to the question at these sites, did you?

The original statement was that more people get salmonella from pet iguanas than from raw eggs. I didn't see anything on this site that indicates what source of transmission is more common.

They said both eggs and reptile pets were especially likely.
