Getting word out....help about it

dmlove May 25, 2004 06:10 PM

Well...lets see...If this is against the TOS im sorry, but im not advertising. Im just wondering how the heck people manage to sell all their babies...well i mean im sure they are left with some. But ive advertised all free ads i can find, i have a website, and i got a Kingsnake account. So far i have sold 3, and have another clutch hatching. Dont get me wrong, i have all the facilities to handle up to 200 babies, so im not worried about me not having the room to handle em all..i just want some selling tips! Any experienced breeder..what do you all do?

I know i probably need to get my name out there, but i do everything. Business cards are in the making, i tell all my friends, i call pet stores to see if they will buy! Any tips? thanks

OH and PS: Anyone else have lots of people "reserve" a dragon just to back out later? This really gets on my nerves, because it gets my hopes up and then **WHOOSH** my balloon deflates when they tell me that they "dont want one" or the "found another deal".

Alright had to vent and ask some questions, IM DONE!! thanks to all that answered in advance!!!

I can't be much help cuz I'm not a breeder... but I had a thought about the reserve thing. Would it work if you were to have people pay a fee to reserve them, so that if they back out you are somehow compensated? It would make them think twice about reserving something if they aren't really sure about it. I know a lot of places do this, not just beardie breeders. Thing is, if you hold something for somebody and they back out, but during that time may have been able to sell it to someone else, then you lose two sales. You really have no obligation to reserve anything for anyone, either tell them that it's only guaranteed for them when you have the money, or they have to pay a reservation fee.

Good luck lol, this season sucks all over, you're not the only one. Kephy has the right idea on reservations, take a non-refundable deposit (non-refundable unless you're unable to produce the animal). Anyway if you find something other than wholesale selling at rediculously low prices, let the rest of us know also...

Agreed! This season has been slow, slow and even more slow LOL

Usually I sell out of an entire clutch within 2 weeks of advertising them. This season I have been selling of groups of babies at about $25 a piece! Arrrrrrrggg!

Something to keep in mind is that most breeders do some wholesale--even the big ones with big names. Even for the ridiculously cheap prices. That way you lessen the burden on yourself and can pick out the best ones to raise and sell for good money without as much sweat. It is really the only way to do it. Especially if you are in the process of building your name. And dont feel bad about approaching dealers that you feel OK about selling to. Many dealers just buy that way and dont go out looking for the 10 lots.

As for reserves and lists, yup, most back out unless you take a nonrefundable deposit. You might just want to not mess with it at all, and just sell them when they are ready, straight up.

Best of luck (to all this season!)

Agreed with Dana on the deposits.... I insist on a 50% NON refundable deposit to hold any of my dragons. They are far less likely to back out if they are going to lose money
