box turtle eggs

phil nj May 25, 2004 06:32 PM

My female eastern layed her first clutch of 6 eggs yesterday. It is a full 2-3 weeks earlier than she ever has layed her eggs. The weather has been more summer like than spring so that probably is the reason. She also usually lays 7-9 eggs per clutch. Last year she layed 2 clutches the first 9 the second 7 eggs and in previous years she layed 7. I was just wondering if others are seeing eggs earlier than usual. She is a very large turtle 6 1/2 inches over 1000grams.

I definately am seeing eggs earlier this year.
So far I've had one 3 toed lay 5 eggs on Friday night and I've had three ornates lay a clutch each. I've got another 3 toed that is just starting to show signs of being gravid.
I usually don't see eggs until June, not sure what the deal is.

One of my girls laid eggs during a howling storm here Wednesday evening, a good 3 weeks earlier than her first clutch last year, and I've noticed a couple of the other girls drinking lots of water and marching around after the others have retired. Wouldn't be surprised to have more eggs by the end of the weekend...
