Ball Python late laying eggs......can't feel eggs anymore.........question

tomsey May 25, 2004 07:45 PM

When palpating my ball python, I could feel five eggs. The eggs were due two days ago. Until two days ago, I could feel the eggs going bump-da-bump past my fingers. Now I feel nothing.

Do the eggs move close together, like lining up, just before she lays? If so, that would explain why I can't feel them anymore.

Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Brian

They can, but not always.

I wouldn't be palpating a friggin' female that's due to lay eggs. If she has eggs, they will be layed. Leave the damn snake alone. They search for a nice quiet place to lay, so no wonder she's past her "due date".

And they don't lay on a specific day, so how the heck can she be 2 days past the lay date? They lay within a range of days that has been recorded to cover 19 to 45 days. So is your snake at Day 47 after PLS?

I am not some young douchebag and thus I take offense to being treated as such.
I will respond to your insults and questions in order.
1. She's not a "damn" snake.
2. The range of days to lay after PLS, as I was told, is 25-30 days. I based the "2 days late" on the 30 days.
3. My snake is at DAY 32 after PLS.

Anyway, thank you for your response and for correcting the erroneous information that I had.
I will also leave her alone to allow her to lay her eggs.

Thanks,
Brian

I have never been able to feel eggs by palpating after they start to really develop. IMHO, you can only palpate early on. Towards the end, the eggs are large, smooth and flexible.

I would not palpate this late in the process anyway. Only after she has laid do I check for retained eggs.

Just leave her alone and carefully check daily.

Dear Concerned Parent to Be:

I agree w/ jay's comments and would liek to add one thing. Reatined eggs do oocur and the most telltale sign that the eggs are not coming out normally is when only one or two of a clucth come out at a time with long (hours ot days) between the other eggs. I have had this occur twice w/ the same female and of all the clutches we have hatched out (250 ) these are the only incidents.

If it does happen see your vet IMMEDIATELY and she/he wil probably recommend using Oxytocin to stimulate contractions.

Hope this helps.

Don't worry...I went through the same exact experience this year...worrying about "what happened to her eggs!!??" They are there...What I did was put her in a smaller enclosure because they like to feel secure. My female went to 42 days past PLS!!!!! I guess different females have different agendas. All I can say is be patient and hang in there...the eggs will come )
