I don't have experience with many other ratsnake species, but there are some with worse reputations than black rats. Most black rats will calm down with regular handling, but can be squirmy as babies. Look back a few days and there's a post by Joliff showing what several types of licorice black rats look like as babies. The licorice trait is also known as "white-sided" for obvious reasons if you've seen one. There are white-sided everglades ratsnakes which are sometimes called "ghost glades" which look somewhat different. I've never heard of anything but a black rat called licorice before though. I hope that helps.
Black Rats...I have 6 adults, whitesided and het for whiteside as well as het for whiteside and albino. While their size can be intimidating, they are gentle giants. My largest, a male het for whiteside, is pretty big and thick. He has never bitten me and never even attempted to bite. My younger females have bitten but it was in response to really limiting their movement because I was getting ready to probe them. No big deal, kings bite harder.
