It's a red eared slider. There is only one variety of Red Eared Slider.

Then how come he looks totaly different than my friends red ear?

maybe your friend does not really have a res. Yours is one!

if you could post a picture of your friends turtle, we could ID that one as well.

Yes, this is an RES. I have noticed that there can be many variations in turtle shells of the same subspecies. I keep painteds and box turtles and the shells can be lighter or darker, the stripes on the skin can be also. This can depend on the age of the turtle too.

I hope that this helps.

There are several sliders that bear the symbolic red ears that earn the red eared slider their name. Yours looks like your run of the mill RES. Your friends could too, I've seen tons of different shell, skin, marking variations. OR, your friend could have a different race. Also if one is wild and the other captive, that can make a difference.

I was taught that if it had red ears it was an RES. thus yours is a RES, however, I see your concern. I have never, in 35 years seen a RES with that shell coloration. Usually they are a dark green/yellow combo with a definite pattern. So I wonder . . . A game ranger in my neck of the woods thinks that he's seen some crosses between painteds and RES. I guess it's time to delve into some more field research . . .

Painted Turtles and Red-Eared Sliders cannot hybridize, but Red-Eared Sliders and Yellow-Bellied Sliders canas well as the Cumberland Slider.

Nope that one right in front is a Red-Eared Slider, and the turtle behind it is a Painted Turtle.
