Shy Leo.

Hi, My leopard gecko is 6 months old. I just bought him last friday. I know he's still getting used to his new enviroment so he's pretty shy. He never leaves his cave on the hot side of the cage even though it was overheated (up to 100 degrees. Fixed yesterday). He only seems to come out when i'm asleep or leave the room. he'll run and hide as soon as i get up or enter the room. He does run out and hunt his crickets, but nly when i'm far away from the cage. I know this is normal for them, but how long does this behavior usually last for normally, and how long should i wait to attempt to start taming it?

I would say once you've had him a week he should be settled enough to start trying to get him used to your hand. Here's what worked for me with my male. I would take the hides out and just put my hand in there and sit there for several minutes. I did this for a while once or twice a day. Then once he got used to that I would slide my hand to him palm up. If he ran I stopped. Finally he would step onto my hand for a moment. After that I just started picking him up and letting him on the bed and stuff. I got my female when she was older, but she has never warmed up and tries to bite still (got her as an older juvie from petstore). It just depends on the gecko, most are not this aggressive. Good luck.
