Regurgitation (it's abit of long one folks)

clemie May 26, 2004 06:34 AM

Hi All

Last night i went to the herp room to check on things before i went to bed and my 01 female cremsicle corn who laid 11 eggs on the 20th of April (it was her first clutch) was crawling around with her mouth open. I watched her for about 10 mins and she regurgitated a near fully digested mouse (just hair mostly, she was last fed exactly 7 days ago today, and was due for a feed today). She soon settled back into her favourite spot so I left her alone over night as not to stress her and when I checked on her this morning she had regurgated a second.

I have now removed her from her tank and placed her in a simple rubbermaid set up with heat pad for warmth and newspaper to monitor any stools.

Over the last few weeks i have been feeding her up as she was skinny after she laid her eggs. She has eaten 3 mice a week for the last 4 weeks. I was wondering that maybe i've fed her to much and she can't digest it or perhaps theres a different reason. Temps are spot on and all controled by themostat, so no probs there. Perhaps shes retained sperm and is gravid again and can't pass the waste from the last feed.

Any advice or suggestions would be most greatfully recieved as she's a beut and i'd hate anything to happen to her.
Thanks for you time.
Clem.

An adult corn doesnt need to eat that much ever.Give her a couple of weeks to get herself back on track then just feed a mouse every 7-10 days.My adults only get fed every three weeks and there almost obese.I know they look puny after laying eggs but a mouse a week will fix her up in no time. You did the right thing by moving her into a stress free enviroment.

Hi

Thanks for the advice. This is my first year breeding my corns and my local herp shop said to feed her as much as she would eat in the month after laying, I guess she's had enough now as she's regained nearly all her weight. I'll cut her feeding back and hopefully that will sort the problem out.

Thanks for your advice.

You said she was due to be fed today~ don't. Wait at least 7 to 10 days before feeding after a regurge~ she can't digest it otherwise and will just regurge again. Vicious cycle once it starts.

Like Gargoyle said~won't hurt her at all to do without for a couple weeks.

Good luck

Thanks fo the advice Cheryl it's much appreciated. I'll give her a week, maybe two without food and hopefully that should see her right. If I have any further probs luckily i've got a very good exotic pet vet near me and i'll whip her up there.

Once again, thanks for your help. I've never had a snake regurge and it was tad worrying.
Clem.
