Getting Babies to Feed, Best Way?

bcwatson101 May 26, 2004 08:48 AM

My babies are between 1-3 days old. I have tried putting them in a tupperware container with pinheads to 1/8" crickets to watch and make sure they would start to eat. The problem is no one wants to eat. They have not started to eat and they seem to care less about the presence of food. I hate to put crickets in the cage since I was told you have to remove the left overs after each feeding and the crickets are so small that they would be hard to catch. Has anyone had any great success in getting their babies to feed right away? How did you do it? What age should I expect them to start wanting to eat? I'm trying to avoid nips any way I can. Thanks for your answers!!!!!

It's not uncomon for them to not want to eat for the first few days, just keep trying. If they don't eat in the next couple of days though, come back here because something will need done if they aren't eating by then.

Thanks! I tried feeding them again at lunch since they would not eat this morning. This time I tried putting the pinheads in their cage. Two of the 18 dragons ate today. One dragon is 3 days old and the other is two. Only 16 more dragons to go. I wish I had the problem of not wanting to eat

Sounds like they're doing fine, pretty soon you'll be feeding them with a shovel...lol just kidding, well not too far off though.

I was really worried at first with my baby beardie. He was sold to me at 3 days of age, and according to the seller he was eating regularly... I took him home and he wouldn't eat a thing....
It took until his 5th day after hatching to finally eat. Just make sure to provide them with water, you can also offer salads to keep in there in the mean time so if they do get hungry they have something to eat. Chances are though they wont touch the salad till they get a little bigger, but it's always best to leave some there available for them to try if they want to.
It took my guy almost 2.5 months before he would regularly eat salads.
