genetics of whitesideds.......color question

Sonya May 26, 2004 11:53 AM

Okay, I have some whitesided everglades. Dwight Good's work. They are a much paler orange (like creamsicle) compared to my male Everglades. Does the creation of a whitesided dilute the base color? I see licorice blacks and see a paler black too, so I am thinking.
Is it a simple recessive? If next year I bred my female white sided to my very orange male and then back to an F2 male could I put more color into the line or will it dilute?

TIA

It definately can. If you are using an animal that has a more defined (darker) stripe, you will have more of a chance at producing animals with a darker coloured stripe. If you are using an animal w/ a uni-coloured stripe, the resulta are almost always animals w/ lighter coloured stripes. That was one of the posts that got me started thinking about this. The snakes I have that are whitesided are quite light orange, but have quite an well colored head. I guess I am off to take some picts. At least I have a year or two to work it out.
