Question about silkworms...

jrbl May 26, 2004 11:59 AM

Hi,
I have been wondering if it would be okay to fertilize the plants in my herp cages with silkworm poop(sorry, I forgot the correct word). I figure mulberry leaves are good and silkworms are good, so the silkworm poop can't be bad. Is it okay to fertilize plants with silkworm poop? I have been looking for an "all natural" way to fertilize the plants in my herp cages, and the silkworms produce a whole lot of poop, and it is just going in the garbage. Oh, I want to ask another question. Is it okay to have "free-roaming" silkworms in with chameleons? I figure if I put a couple silkies in my chameleon cage with a mulberry leaf, they would just stay there and get fatter until they are eaten. Would this be okay to do? Any help would be appreciated. Josh

I don't know about the poo (frass) but I suppose you could try it. I would test it first on a plant that isn't in the viv. That way if you wound up with mold or some other nasty you wouldn't have to change your bedding in the viv. I never really worry about fertilizer as I just leave the dead leaf and plant stuff in there to decompose. They seem to do OK.

As for leaving a couple of silkworms in the viv, I do that from time to time. My babies won't eat while I'm watching at first so I drop a few in and leave the room. When I come back they're always gone!
