His signature at the bottom has DVM after it.
I wanted to ask him a question about a certain medication...
Thanks,

I think serpentcity is the guy you are looking for. I've seen his posts a few times and DVM is in the signature line.

Thanks so much... that's exactly who I was looking for.

If you don't hear from him, just ask here. I've had to treat all my own animals for years, cuz vet's (most) will not touch a venomous animal. I got pretty good at it to...LOL.
Good luck,
Chad
I've been trying to lay off the kingsnake people... because I've already made a pest out of myself over my situation.
My vet gave my 3 month old Brazilian Rainbow an injection of Gentamicin on Monday, and wants me to come back today, and Friday for 2 more injections. (for an RI)
I'm worried about kidney damage in a snake so small...
Any suggestions?
I'm debating on not taking him back to my vet.
Sorry, I've only used Amikacin for RI's, and never used Gentamicin. Hope you get in touch with someone who can help you.
Good luck,
Chad

Here's a link that may help. I've found quite a bit of useful info in the past, but this is back from 2000 and I haven't found a newer list online yet.
I have a pretty good vet, and whenever I get a chance I ask him as much as I can. We discussed treating RI and the meds used.
He said Gentamicin used to be the common drug, but there were side effects, such as kidney damage, dehydration, and sometimes death in weaker animals.
He said that when Amikacin came out, he never used Gentamicin for RI again, unless the animal was not responding to the Amikacin.
Hope this helps some, maybe your vet isn't up to date on his retile treatment.
I would at least talk to your vet about using other drugs see what he has to say.

When I took him in to see my vet, I had with me several pages of info I printed out... mostly from people on the Rainbow Forum who are trying to help me.
I suggested Amikacin, and my vet said that Gentamicin is better and has less of a chance of causing nephrotoxicity (I've been studying up!
) I was hesitant, but of course I had to go with what he recommended, because although he doesn't know MUCH about them, at least he knows SOMETHING. The other vets in my area are completely worthless.
I'm worried about the kidney problems, but took him back in yesterday for his second injection. He's due tomorrow for his 3rd, and final injection.
I must say, he's doing MUCH better. No more mucus, hardly any "popping" noises... AND he ATE last night... for the first time (for me)... AND it was his first frozen thawed EVER! (just a pinky... and I kinda had to squish its head, but he took it!) Then, he took two BIG drinks of water, and soaked in his water bowl for a few minutes. I almost cried! I'm so pathetic!
Thank you all... and if you have anymore advice, such as how long do I keep him in a smaller container with elevated temps... please let me know.
Appreciate your help,
Mindy
I wouldn't worry about it too much, that med was used for years, but if Amikacin is safer, in the future I would tell the vet that I wanted to use it.
My vet always talks to me about any meds he wants to use and explains any possible side effects, then asks if I want to go ahead.
Maybe he is wrong about the Gentamicin, although I trust him thoroughly, he is used by all the local breeders that I know.
Oh BTW, He has given me single shots of Gentamicin for ailments other than RI.
I may be mistaken but I believe any problems that arise with the drugs use, is from repeated doses as required for RI treatment.
good luck,
TomChambers
I am hoping that the three injections won't do any damage. And, he's barely giving him any... the syringe only had a tiny bit of gentamicin in it (I really looked yesterday).
I'll probably take him for the third and final injection. I've been lucky so far, and I would hate to stop the meds and have him relapse. And boy! Is he beautiful! I sure hope I have the chance to see him "grow up".
Thanks again,
Mindy
