Ants in cage

svinarsk May 26, 2004 03:30 PM

Well... now that it is warmer outside, the bugs are out! My 11 month old iggie lives in a 4x5x7 environment. The environment is kept clean and is cleaned about every 2 weeks. Recently, I have been noticing ants attacking my iggie's daily salad. I searched every crack in his environment and do not notice where these suckers are coming from. Also, recently I have been noticing the ants crawling on him as well. At most, ive seen about 5 ants at a time in the whole enclosure, so it is not a major problem. I am worried that my ig has been swallowing some of these ants along with his food. Can ants be a problem for igs? Ive been thinking NO because arent there ants in the wild? Anyways, I hope the problem clears up and that it doesnt cause any harm to my little friend.

It's ant invasion time at my house, too. But as far as your ig is concerned, eating an ant or two won't hurt him if you are concerned about animal protein. I'd hate to see him swarmed by a lot of them though. I'd try the various ant baits in your local hardware stores.

When my local baits don't work, I make this recipe: 1 tsp boric acid (usually the main ingredient in roach powder), 1 tbsp sugar, and 3 tbsp warm water; soak a piece of paper towel with the solution and place the wad in the center of their track. The ants will line up around it, sucking the potion down. It takes about 3 days, and they just vanish.

A few weeks ago i found a few ants inside my geckos cage and another few inside my old hamster's cage.As they were only a few i didnt care about.A few days latter i noticed my gecko ( a sweet female leo gecko) was very nervous trying to escape from her cage. When i checked her i found out she was COVERED with tiny little ants!I put her inside the bathroom sink filled with water to get rid of the ants and i threw away her food.I cleaned the whole cage but the other day the ants came back even in a larger number! An ants attack!
To make the problem even worse my son noticed that the old hamster's back was bleeding and he seemed to be in pain.Well, the tiny ants were eating him alive, the poor thing!Again i soaked him in the water and i bought, in a shop close to my house, a spray against ants.I put it all over the floor around my pets cage.It didnt harm my pets but i got rid of the ants for good!

I dont ahve an iggy but i have encountered ants..
my parents bought this stuff, i dont remember the name, but it comes in a red bottle that looks like those Dristan nasal containers, you know that you spray up your noe. well it woks wonders, you put a few rops around here and there and they totally made the ants go away at my parents camper. and there were alot! so go look in like a hardware store, i think they got it in one, its red, in a dristan looking bottle :P
