slow veiled

chamsrcool May 26, 2004 03:45 PM

my veiled cahm seems to be a slow one. its been this way since i got it abouta month ago. it takes him forever to eat i mean forever.

I hae jacksons that practically runn to the food and eat it but this veile djust looks at for a really long time then decides he wants to eat then it takes him forever to aim and if the bug hasn't moved far in this amount of time he hits it but only if the bug moves so the head it in a spot he can hit.
Is it normal for them to take this long.
Is it becuase he is a baby and just learning to use his tongue(my jacksons are adults)?

Sounds like he's bored out of his mind with what you're feeding him. Try another kind of feeder.

offering a variety might liven him up a bit. Luna will often do the same and she will cock her head in all directions to get the head first (supers and butterworms). If they move too far away she usually won;t go after it. Crickets are still her favorite and gets very excited when she sees them - aims, hits, eats and then goes for the next. I have nothing to comapre her to since she is my only cham, but she can be a bit slow ;/

I agree with all of that,
I find it strange, however, that a juvi would be bored of any kind of food??
All of my chams also love crickets just like luna, I think its the quick mouse-like movement of them or the squishy/watery insides that they like, perhaps? They also have quite soft exoskeletons compared to meal/superworms and other buggies.

good luck with your little guy!
(try a waxworm once in a while, like one or 2 a week for a couple of weeks, chams like yellow!!)

Another problem you could be facing is stress. Maybe your cham isn't comfortable feeding from you yet? Also, I've heard from different sources that the color of clothing you are wearing could effect how your cham sees you.. That's not something I know for a fact but it sounds possible.
