Most people say that sand isnt the best substrate for a tokay simply because their digestive system doesnt really know how to deal with it. A lot of the time they get it in their mouth since theyre such agressive feeders and it may get stuck. Calcium sand is better but not by much because it may cause calcium overdose. It also makes the environment too dry in most cases so most books/experts recommend bed-a-beast (compressed coconut) or bark. It also seems that they can digest it much easier since its not as dry. Tokays also love hideouts that are high up so they can hide during the day. Along with that its also preferred that the side with the hideout is covered by some backing so the gecko feels secure like theres no way to see it. Thats the picture of the tank for my tokay, its not yet done but its getting there. When I finish I can post a pic if you would like.

You can get bed-a-beast or its generic equivolent eco-earth which is what I use @ www.herpsupplies.com. You have a good start but definately lose the sand and get him into much bigger enclosure. I have always recommended 65G minimum for a single tokay and 100G minimum for a pair. If you need any additional or specific help feel free to email me. Tokays are wonderful animals.

Hi,
sorry, looks bad.
There are no vertical secure hidings in the upper part of the cage, which would be important for a tokay. Also the cage looks too dry. Sand is not a good substrate for a rainforest like climate which the tokay needs. Also tokays are arboreal and should not be kept in cages which are not at least 3 ft tall.
And as you know...that tank sizwise would suffice for the first three months of a hatchlings live-but NOT for your animal. 65, better 100 gallon are about a compromised but sufficient size for an adult.
Please consider that and you will have 20 years or more of tokay fun.

Hello Ingo,

How about you post a pic of your tokay enclousers.

I have to agree with you on the tank size, but we're from the bigger is better school of thought.

There definitly needs to be vertical hiding areas.

you need to get him off the sand and he needs a bigger taller cage.
