hi new to this forum............tadpoles at daycare.........questions please........

starmom May 26, 2004 09:22 PM

im a reptile keeper, have mostly lizards of various species..

my daughters daycare got two tadpoles, a 10 gal tank, a green leafy plant that floats in the water some tadpole food......

the water is disgusting and one has already died....I figured that these girls had gotten the correct infomation before getting these. on monday when one died i told them they needed to change out most of this water and put in fresh..they said that where they got them from told them they didnt have to do anything but feed them........I changed out around 25% probably needed more (so sad.......)

so............
what special stuff do they need (ive been surfing and there is not much out there as far as caresheets for these, i tried google, dogpile, etc)

lights, heat (what temp), filtration(air stone enough for 2 or do they need an actual filter).....what and how often to feed......water changes how often 25%?

would really appreciate some insight........the kids are so upset that the first one died, i will actively participte in ensuring the health of the remaning ones.......

thanks.....
sue

Do you know the kind of tadpoles??
This can make a difference in the husbandry requirements.
If you want continue the partial water changes and add a sponge filter to the tank. This will help control the water quality for the remaining tadpole.

i've been raising a batch of wood frog tadpoles and they've done quite well in a 10 gallon...i toss in some good quality green leafy stuff as needed and occassionally some flake food...2 of the li'l guys just moved on to land (i've got a plastic container filled with stone and soil in one corner)...they're super tiny, smaller than their cousins still in the water...i've read that they won't eat until their tails have disappeared, but i'm still trying to sort out what to feed them when they do get hungry...any suggestions???
