Washing Plants

draco May 26, 2004 10:13 PM

I just bought the plants for my future Jacksons enclosure. A Ficus and an Umbrella Plant. Is there a good way to wash off any possible pesticides. I was thinking of using a spray bottle with a soapy water solution, then a good dose of water. Any suggestions are welcomed.

Thanks, Ken

You have the right idea!

The soapy water idea is awesome, as long as its pretty diluted so the soapiness doesn't get into the soil. It is a must to change the soil in new plants for chameleons in case of soil fertilizers and pesticides, so before you do that, clean the leaves with the soapy water and then change the soil, then the soap won't hurt the plant.

Also, just do the soapy water routine and then put the plant in the shower to rinse for a good 5-10 mins. The leaves should be shiny in light. If they are still matte or dull-coloured you will need to use a soft cloth to clean EVERY SINGLE leaf (this doesn't require fine detail in cleaning, just a good pass on each leaf will do).

Good luck washing etc!
