Anytime you have a tree frog burrowing in the substrate - even hanging out on the ground during awake hours alot - you have a problem. I can't pinpoint what that is without knowing all the specifics of your set up. The watt bulb depends on what size tank and how close to the top it is. What are the temps and the humidity level - if you don't have guages to measure them, you need some. Background is needed for the frog to have seclusion and feel secure but the lack of it likely wouldn't cause this behavior. Is the water treated and how often changed? Does he have any tank mates? Does he have places to hide "in the trees" like branches in plants, cork bark, etc? Is he eating? Please let us know all of this and we can be of more help.
