Good news... I think...

tygar May 27, 2004 12:20 PM

My sick BRB seems to be doing better... because of the antibiotics and the increased temps. No more mucus... hardly any "popping"...
Last night, I offered him a f/t pinky (as a small snack). He's never eaten f/t... the breeder fed live.
He didn't want anything to do with it at first, but I (this is gross) took the hemostats and "smushed" the pinky's head a bit... and he ate it like a champ! I almost freaking cried! (God, I'm a mess! )
After the pinky, he drank from his water dish for a LONG time, then climbed in for a little soak! I almost felt like when my oldest son took the school-bus for the first time (well, not quite... but, you get the idea ... I'm proud he's getting better).
I haven't dealt with this before, but I believe these are all good signs!
Thanks everyone,
Mindy

Mindy,
. Congratulations. This all sounds like good news. You have made some tough decisions and they seem to be paying off for you. Now you are faced with another tough decision. The other day I recommended continuing the entire regimen of antibiotics to avoid developing mutations in the bacteria so that they do not mutate and become immune to the antibiotic. The problem with this is that antibiotics are tough on kidneys. The more doses of antibiotics the more chance of kidney damage. I think you should discuss this with your vet.

My guy is due for one more dose... tomorrow.
I hate to skip it, because I know with antibiotics, you are to go the "full course". However, I'm am concerned, and have made myself very aware of the possibility of nephrotoxicity.
As of yesterday, my vet recommended the last injection. I guess I'll have another tough decision tomorrow.
Thanks again,

Mindy

Mindy,
. Just two injections? There must be something I do not know about gentamicin. Because it is just one more injection I would go for it.

So, say I get the last injection... and notice even more improvement...
How long do I keep him in this shoebox? With the two little humid hides, a small water dish, AND a thermometer, there is very little room.
Also, when should I lower the temps? Right now, they're right around 90 on the warm side, and 82 on the cool.

You just have to do it, besides from your reply the little darlin' is doing better-even ate and drank. If it's had adequate fluid intake you concerns are unnecessary. I would not stop what you are doing. Keep going. I wouldn't change anything until the critter defecates and eats again.

Glad it's feeling better,
Linda

I had to take one pic tonight... he looks so nice after his shed... and he has a lot of white on him tonight.
I'm very proud.
