This question probably belongs in the caging forum, but oh well. . . . .

Hello,

I have been debating buying/building a rack system for my geckos for well over a month now, and I haven't come close to making a decision. I was wondering does anyone have experience building with foamed PVC sheets? I really like the way the boaphile racks look, but they are way too expensive for me.

Also, does anyone have any building plans that use something other than melamine? That stuff looks nice, but it is so heavy. I use 28qt Sterilite boxes, and I'd like to stack them 7 or 8 high. Is melamine really the best/easiest way to go, or are there other options? Any thoughts or photos would help me a lot.

Thanks!!!

Hey what's wrong with that question? You might wait weeks for an answer on the caging forum, is there really a caging forum, anyway?
Well, I have melamine displays and racks that I'm quite proud to have designed and built and would have been content to stick with until I saw Kevin Dunne's lizard room. He has his walls lined with those bookshelf thingies with the holes in them. You know, the ones that you put the metal shelf brackets up with. Then he runs heat tape along the back of the, um, melamine shelves. The beauty of this design is that you can redesign your wall a million different ways. Switch from shoeboxes in the hatchling season then change it over to sweater boxes. I even use part of the room for hovabators and slide the cricket bins under the bottom.
Let your imagination be your only limit! It give me much more versitility and with very little left touching the floor, I can spot runaways instantly. No more loose crickets either!

Rick,
sounds really cool, but I can't picture what your talking about. Are the boxes lidless on the shelf? where can I go to look at an example?
thanks,

Do you have any photos of your setup or links to where you saw Kevin Dunne's lizard room? It sounds intersting. If you do, please post them or email me.

Thanks a lot!

I am building a few racks, most for BPs the rest Leos. I woulden't use malamine either, I am using 2x4s and expanded PVC. If you REALLY want it to be lighter, I am sure you could make it completely out of the PVC, but it would be much harder to build and make it accurate. I will not be moving the racks and am building them right where I want them. The only time they will be moved is when I move. There is alot of materials out there to work with, do a little research at home depot or somewhere like that to see what you can come up with. Sealed plywood would work, but probably not much lighter.

You can never have just one gecko. Actually it is almost impossible to have two
