Cage carpet???

theandigirl May 27, 2004 02:58 PM

Ok so I know that cage carpet is supposed to be bad for these guys. I read about their nails getting caught and all that. My question is has anyone had any personal experienced either bad or good with cage carpet. My little 5 month colombian black and white is on cage carpet (I hope I dont get lynched for that ) I keep his nails trimmed weekly and supply him a nice burrowing spot. He doesnt try to dig on the carpet at all just the burrow. Anyone have any thoughts?? I really dont want to switch him, most of my large herps are on carpet (easier to clean, prevent mites, and monitor stool). I appreciate the opinions.

Ditch the carpet for all your animals. That carpet was used 10 years ago when people didn't know any better. No herp should ever be forced to live on that stuff. How do you expect to keep the needed humidity with that stuff? You will not be able to! Your Tegu will then start having shed problems and you will next be asking how to save your Tegus toes and tail from falling off. Sorry if you feel these are harsh words but I am concerned more with your Tegus health. Get Cypress mulch!!!!

Humidity, like mentioned, could be a troublesome factor... I'm sure you can get around it with expensive misters and foggers... but that wouldnt be worth it. Also, the main reason as to why I would not use carpet is because tegus love to burrow... My tegu burrows for fun and to sleep... He would get awfully cranky if i took away his mulch...!
