proveing a 100% het

grant May 27, 2004 04:29 PM

What kind of paper work should come with a 100% het snake? I have a pair that are supose to be 100% het for albino. They came with a personal certificate saying they were both hets and also there is supose to be a chip in them. Where is the chip and is it the same kind used in horses and dogs? Also when breed together all of the babies should be 100% het for albino unless they are albino correct? Thanks for your help, new to this het stuff!!!

Nope, the wild-type appearing hatchlings would be 66% possible hets. The only way to get a 100% het is for one of the parents to be homozygous. As far as the chip, it should be the same type as used for other animals (there are several brands) and you should be able to get it read at the vet or animal shelter. Knowing what brand it is would be helpful as you could call ahead to make sure that wherever you take it has the right reader. I would expect the chip to be implanted under a belly scale - running the reader along the snakes body should find it if it's there. As for the certification, a guarantee or certification is only as good as the integrity of the breeder you got it from.

Good luck and have fun!

If they are 100% hets than one of the parents had to be a visual carrier (homozygotic) for that trait. The seller should be able to furnish pictures of the homo parent but otherwise the breeders reputation is your only guide.
