Hypo ?.....

Ackieman Jun 18, 2003 12:44 AM

I have a question about the Hypo gene in corns. I was told that hypo is a co-dominate trait. Is this true? The reason I ask is I just hatched out a clutch of eggs from what I thought was a "het for hypo" pair. The hatchlings all look normal to me. If the parents ARE hypo (they look like really nice normal corns to me) then ALL the babies would be hypo, right? If I'm way off in my thinking please set me strait. This Hypo gene thing is beginning to get really confusing to me lol. Thanks for any help.

Hypo is a recessive trait, not co-dominant. Sorry about your luck, het to het can produce ALL normals. Its like the flip of a coin. Maybe better luck next year?

hypo is recessive in corns...
in boas hypo (salmon) is codominant

From a breeding of two normal corns both of which are het for hypo, you would expect to get 25% of the offspring normal without the gene for Hypo, 50% of the offspring will look normal and be het for hypo (can't tell these guys apart from the not-het-for-hypo ones), and 25% should be hypo. This is a statistical thing... in other words, should be, and really are, are two different things!

There are at least 2 separate recessive hypo genes, there are probably more.

This 'could' be whats going on, or your snakes 'may' not both be het hypo.

Another possibility is that some of the lighter snakes are indeed hypo but will not lighten up until later in life.

There are many possibilities, I hope you can figure it out!

Clint, have you heard anyone trying to meld the 2 hypos?
It could produce interesting results,... then again, maybe not.....

I know Rich Z. has or had some het for both (unintentionally).

The only problem would be the offspring of those hets would be pretty hard to tell what was what. I don't think that the double homo snakes would be anything different looking then a hypo but I've not heard of anything definate yet.

Hi Clint,
Here's the whole story. I bred a Hypo male to a Okeetee female and held back 2.2 from that clutch,2.1 ended up being hypo. I bred those together and now I have corns that all look hypo. Is there a way to tell which ones are "true" hypo's and which ones are just nice normals? This is my dilemma!! lol. Thanks for the info.

Unfortunately, there is no way to know for sure.

I have hatched out many Crimsons and Ghosts that are easy to distinguish from normals at hatching. I haven't yet run across a scenario like yours. I'd just give it your best guess and pass that info along with the babies, it's about the best you can do.

you could look at the belly pattern. the checkers in hypos are a tan to reddish color, and the checkers in a normal are black. at least in my hypos it is.... actually come to think of it... i haven't seen many people's hypo's bellies. i think this is true for the hypos. i got mine from rich z. are yours like that clint?

Mine are also from BleepenCo.

I've seen some that have the reddish, brown checkering but have also seen them in shades of gray.
