Clear nail question.

rujonesin May 27, 2004 05:31 PM

These are 3 day old hatchlings from a snow X snow breeding. Neither parent was clear-nailed but both parents had one clear nailed parent. So if it really is a recessive trait I should end up with about 25% clear nailed babies. Give or take. When does it become apparent in the babies which ones will be clear nailed and which ones won't? About half of them now appear to have "lighter" nails but they are so small it's really hard to determine. Just curious if anyone has raised some clear nailed babies and might know the answer. They are almost all looking very light and pastel in appearance even at this very early stage.

My take:
I have not bred my clear nail dragons yet but I received most of them at 3-4 weeks old. When I went to my buddies house to pick them out I could tell on most of them. Even the younger clutches(1-2 weeks) he had you could tell they were clear nails. He said for the most part you can tell right away. A few of them from his hets took a few weeks to really tell they were clear nails, but that is b/c they were clear nails but just not as clear as some of the others. These both have clear nails and the Orange one has slightly darker nails then the white female on right.

I don't do breeding but I now that you mention clear nails I am curious as to what this might mean genetically/morph wise. One of mine has clear nails and I never really gave it any thought but now I am simply curious.

Thanks,
michele

Clear nails are considered a trait of true hypos.
