How often do crested geckos lose their tail?

turtlequest May 27, 2004 05:42 PM

I seem to see alot of pictures of cresties with missing tails...how easy, and often does this occur. Do they ever grow back?

I don't think it happens all that easily unless you've got cresteds (usually two or more males together with a female) that are biting cagemates' tails. Even though I've had a few accidental rough handlings of my cresteds, ones I thought would surely result in a dropped tail, it hasn't happened to me yet.

Once they lose their tail, however, it will NOT grow back. Other Rhacodactylus will regrow tails, but not cresteds. They do just fine without them, and it seems most adult cresteds in the wild don't have tails. It's really just an aesthetic thing for keepers, I suppose.
