Looking for a little advice

haddachoose1 May 27, 2004 07:58 PM

I have a bullsnake that is close to a year old now who I am trying to get to eat bigger rats without much luck. Maybe I should have pushed them on him sooner but I didn't want to waste all the smaller ones I had purchased.

I'm trying to get him on weanling rats. He's plenty big enough to eat them and did eat the first one I offered. He now seems scared of them and won't touch them, but will eat rat pinkies with a vengence. Maybe I spoiled him.

I've tried leaving one in his hide with him and I've offered him one right after a rat pinky with no luck. He's plenty healthy but I think he would be better off with larger rats.

Any suggestions will be appreciated!

If your bull is only a year old..chances are weanling rats will be way too big. But then again....sizes vary with different mouse producers. What you may be calling weanling could be different with someone else.

Anyways.......rat pinks seem fine for a yearling, but the next size up should be rat fuzzies.

If he doesn't want to eat them....then that is him telling you that plain and simple. Myself and others usually go by the food item being as big as the widest part of the snake. Anything bigger could not be eaten or could be eaten and may cause some trouble.

Take care!~

Thanks Billy. The rats I was trying to feed him are about the same diameter as the snake. When he ate the first one, he wasn't extended very noticably. He has been eating rat fuzzies. I can go back to those and try again after awhile.
