A few questions regarding eye sight of BP's

LeeFobes Jun 18, 2003 01:32 AM

How good can BP's see? i was checking up on my snake, and he struck the acrylic pretty hard (can this hurt the snake? he doesnt do it much) im thinking they cant see thru the glass with their eyes, only the heat pits, and thats why he strikes ? hes fine when i hold him and aslong as i dont catch him off gaurd (if he sees my hand coming up from the side, he wont do anything). Just curios, also, how can i tame my snake down more? (still strikes from time to time) i take him out every 3 days and hold him for like 30 and put him back. he seems active and healthy. eats once a week and seems to like the mice.

They can see through it with their eyes, they're just a little fuzzy on the concept of glass. I have lots of snakes without heat pits that watch me from the other side of the glass. (and strike at me too)

Well, they have eyesight, it's just not very good. They rely more on Jacobson's Organ and heat. I don't know about non-BPs, tho.

But they can't really understand the concept of "I can see through this, but not get through it."

If he does this a lot, you should definatly consider, like, covering three sides of the aquarium with fabric or paper or somesuch, and putting somthing on the front to discourage him from thinking he can strike through it.

My Snakes

cool, thats what i wanted to hear. On the back of the terrarium i have one of those aquraium backround things, and he doesnt seem to mind it when i put my hand around that area wwhere it starts. one problem is that i want to see my snake. He doesnt strike when im far away, only when i put my head up to the glass to look at him closely (i know thats cuasing it) but hes cool from far distances.
