Use two or more nylon straps with hook-and-loop fasteners (aka "Velcro" on the strap. This will hold down the lid very well.

Another way is weight, but that can be a real pain.

i have used shoe boxes with the lids on,and planned to stack them.i trusted the clips on the end of the lids to hold and drilled small holes on each side of the box thru the lid and body and then inserted small "s" hooks.definaetly not ideal but works in a pinch.i've seen people at shows use 1/2 inch wide rubber bands around the middle.
