Newborn Veilds, Feeding question, please help!!!!

tiki22 Jun 18, 2003 03:38 AM

I just hatched 50 little veild babies and their all hungry!!
I know to feed them after 2 to 4 days after birth but my problem is that I cant seem to find a screen cage that keeps pinhead crix in. They all escape. My veilds eat a few but the rest escape before they have a chance to feed on them. What can I do??? Other feeding methods??? any advice would be very helpful.

Thanks in advance

ok, first hing first. If all the pinheads escape, you must think of something. The #1 thing that i would recommend would be to simply put the pinheads in a cup. In the cup, it will be easier to dust them. Also put a bit of carrot, orange, apple to keep them gutloaded and prevent cannibalism. Second, i will try to perhaps put a barrier in lower parts of the cage with plastic wrap or something. My brother did this once and it worked. Another thing would be to put food in the cage, so that the crix congregate there. This will provide for the hatchlings and also do the whole gut-load thing. These are all the ones i can come up with.

Try www.edsflymeatinc.com They have great fruit flies that I am using for my baby veileds. They also have a special cloth they use in their catalog that keeps these tiny flies in. Attach this over your screen and it breathes and is pretty see thru. I like the flies because they wont chew through the cloth. They won't chew on your chams. They are active during the day and do not hide. You can put fruit on toothpicks to lure the flies to upper branches and the baby chams learn to go there for them. You can buy a few cultures and supplies to make more and they are easy to make. You get thousands of flies from each culture.
