Paternity Testing for Snakes

RandyRemington Jun 18, 2003 03:59 AM

With all the talk of sperm retention and now possibly even parthenogenesis in snakes I’m wondering if there is anyone set up to do paternity testing, specifically for ball pythons, and if so what it would cost? Does a species specific test need to be developed or is there a generic test that would be accurate? I would think there might be a market for paternity tests if they weren’t too expensive for high dollar heterozygous ball pythons which are usually produced by breeding a homozygous male to a number of normal females (which may or may not have breed other males in previous years).

Thanks

I know you can do a basic DNA profile to test for maternal lineage. The mitocondrial DNA is passed along from female to off spring.
