hot spots in NC?

DeanAlessandrini May 28, 2004 08:17 AM

I'm a native Ohioan...will be doing some busines travelling throughout NC over the next year.

I've done a little hunting around the Winston-Salem and Charlotte areas with no luck.

Just looking for photo-release opportunities while in NC.
Any good spots anyone can share?

...I'm looking mainly for snakes...

THANKS

Look under boards, rocks, and old roofing tins. Those are always the best spots in my experience.

Also you might have luck driving around and spotting a snake crossing the roads but its pretty much a luck thing. To increase your chances while road cruising, drive around in areas with larger population densities of snakes.

This advice falls into the Duh category.

Not sure what you mean by that? I was just trying to help the guy out.

I thought you were trying to be funny.
Drive slow where there are a lot of snakes seems like a good idea the problem is knowing where that is.

Try around the Pee Dee River, Uwharrie Nat. Forest, and Ablemarle. Also, a little south of that, along the S. C. border, are the pine barrens/sand hills, whatever, which are good. Then there's always the coastal plain area, which I want to get back to to try for the pine woods snake again.

Dean,
If you're going to be in central NC, then I would cruise the network of roads in the Uwharre National Forest. There are lots of snakes there to see. It's tto late for flipping boards.

I'll be throughout the state throughout the next year...so I was really just looking for some general advice on good spots.

If I make any good finds...I'll post pics!

thanks...

Dean,
What part of NC will you be in? What species are you looking for? Send me an email and we'll talk specifics.
