Breeding Bearded Dragons

Brittbrat May 28, 2004 09:12 AM

I just purchased a female BD yesterday and I already have a male. They are both over 15" from tip of nose to tip of tail. What size does my female need to be before I can safely breed her. I have already done all the research but I never could find a site that said what size she should be. Thanks for your help

Size is not the only factor when breeding dragons. You should try to wait until atleast 15 months to ensure she is done growing. Being gravid will rob her of many needed nutrients that she herself needs to grow and be healthy.

A good rule of thumb is 350 grams (minimum) and at least 15 months old.... 18 months is a better age to start.

I also refuse to breed any female that is under 17" from snout to tail tip. We have so many small adults in the dragon world now and people need to work on bringing a good average size dragon back onto the market.

The other thing I forgot to mention is a good Quarantine period. They need to be housed alone for a minimum of 60 days and have repeat clean fecals and to ensure they are both healthy before breeding.

Before deciding to breed, take a good long time to prepare for where yor hatclings will go. There have been several posts, even seasoned breeders are having difficulty selling. There is considerable expense in incubating and raising a clutch to 6 weeks of age. Much more $$ if you can't sell them. They have to eat, and they eat ALOT.

Just some food for thought....

Thanks for the info. I don't have accurate measurements for the female, I wanted to give her time to adjust before I did anything. I already have an incubator from when I bred my cornsnakes. I also have homes for them. I voluteer at a rescue and thats where I got my male. I know a lot of people wanted him and still want one. So most likely they will be going to the voluteers. And I might keep a couple for myself. I get attached really quick.
Also they are separated and I will not put them together for a little while, I will be graduating from college in July so I have a lot going on right now. But I will have a lot more time in the summer considering I won't be going to school everyday from 8-2pm and then going to work

Thanks Again
Britt
