alterna success this season

duckman57 May 28, 2004 09:39 AM

The hunting this season has been off and on. Since moving to Del Rio the 29th of April, I've collected 16 alterna. I have seen little else other than an occassional atrox, suboc or long-nose. I finally got a gravid female lepidus off Juno Road. The alterna are here and there....mostly from Langtry, but one off Juno, one off doaln creek, one off 277 below border patrol and one in rough canyon. Game wardens don't seem to be bothering anyone even in Langtry, but Cervantes out of Sanderson is his usual hard pysco self. He will write you up for driving on the shoulder and try to do it in Langtry but send you to a Terrell County court where the judge is in his pocket and hates snake hunters. If he stops you in Val Verde County - by law - you do not have to sign a citation that is filled out incorrectly. In other words, force him to cite you in Val Verde County so you can go to court in Del Rio where you stand a better chance. Good luck to all.

16.......holy cow! I guess I'll just crawl back in my hole now. Congratulations and good hunting the rest of the season!

Are you still down there? I heard about your good fortunes lately out West. I wish I could make it this year, but stevenxowens792 had to head down without me while I work on getting a new home. That can take up any extra time and money you think you have so fast it is ridiculous. Hey maybe you can catch up with Duckman57 and get some pictures of his animals to share with all us that are stuck at home this spring/summer.

Good luck to you.

Duckman57 here again. I saw you on 277 earlier in the week. Rob and I were stopped talking as you drove by. Don't be too discouraged by you low numbers; 277 is a lot like Juno road - you see very few alterna, but when you do see one it is usually a really nice snake ! A lot of collectors stick to one area because they know it so well. Try moving to another area like Langtry or Sanderson. I hunt those areas regular and drop in on Juno and 277 late at night. That is when I usually get something there. This year I've gotten them all over. No skill - just in the right place at the right time. I also do not spot cuts a lot. I drive - typically 60 mph and cover about 250 miles per night. You are more than welcome to come by and take as many photos as you like. See me on the road....my license plate is a ducks unlimited "DUKMN". Stop and chat. Good luck to all.
