lele May 28, 2004 10:26 AM

I know this is off topic but I posted to the frog forum wih no reply and I know many of you keep a variety of herps.

A friend has asked me to Of course she will give me detailed care instruction but I always like to learn about things myself as well. I have been unable to find info with this species name -anyone help?

I have not seen it yet so I cannot describe but it is aquatic.

thanks!

Are you referring to those cute little African Frogs that you sometimes see in aquariums?
Yes, they are fully aquatic as far as I know. Don't know about their breeding habits. Can live up to 15 years in captivity.
Best kept in a small 5-10 gallon tank by themselves. Can keep several of them together, as they're not territorial as far as I know. Feed tubifex worms, frozen brine shrimp, or other small live food. They don't eat fish flakes.
Tank should be kept right about 78. Filteration is not necessary, as they breath air, but reccommended if just to keep the tank clean.
I've also heard that you can extend their lives by keeping them in cooler water and not feeding them as much, thereby reducing their metabolism. I think 15 years is a good stretch for a frog, and maybe I don't want my frogs to outlive me (kidding!).
That's all I know about them. Not a frog expert, these are my own personal observations (though I've never kept one longer than 5 years). Hope I didn't post wrong info on them. Someone correct me if I'm wrong!

it may also be an african bullfrog..if that's the case get ready for some fun!!...i have one and it's a savage beast..it eats, eats, eats!!...i think the "american" bullfrog is a bit more savage (i once bought 2 baby sliders in chinatown and made the mistake of putting them in with the bullfrog until i had a minute to get a tank...whoops)but the african is a pig too

it sounds more like Victor's description. She ahs it in a 5 gal tank and said it is very small. I am looking forward to taking care of it!

Yup, I think this is it from your description and hers. She keeps it in a 5 gal tank. I asked if it ate live food and she said she just feeds it some sort of pellet. She is going strictly by what the person she got him from is saying. I'll spoil him and give hime live stuff this summer!

Do you know their scientific name?

It sounds like an african clawed frog, there is a dwarf african clawed frog and a african clawed frog they are completly aquatic and very easy to care for. They do make a specific pellet I think the maker is H.B.H. This is the scientific name of the african clawed frog Xenopus Laevis if it is indeed the same frog you will be able to find tons of info using either that name or its scientific name. Hope this helps.

if it has claws on the back feet its an african clawed frog
good pets eat a whole lot but just dont let it escape! i think they are illegal in calif. saw somethin on the news about it in san fransisco they cant get rid of em'

lele May 29, 2004 07:05 PM

I'll have to ask her about the claws. I live in NH so I doubt it would survive our winters - though there is no chance of an escape with 2 cats in the house!
