Beanie and Digit back from vet...

Linda G May 28, 2004 11:11 AM

I will start with the good news first...The vet thinks Digit
is beautiful and is very healthy. All of his bones are now
hard and jaw is fine. Wow, I saw a Digit I didn't know existed
though! He whipped and had his mouth wide open at her. She
is 90% sure he is a male. She wants to wait a little longer
to be sure but she thinks she can feel the bulge typical of
males. She is very satified with the care I am giving and says
that this is your typical ig with regards to behavior.

Now the bad news...Beanie is not looking so good. She was
sure that the bloodwork, especially calcium was off. She
drew the blood and I got the results today. Everything was
within normal once again. She feels that there is something
that everyone is missing and that her bad care for the first
few years is catching up with her. She had the same thing
happen to her with a rescue she took in and she said that
Beanie is following in her footsteps. She said that eventually
I will need to force feed again as she continues to decline.
Right now, we are going to start calcium supplement and hydration indefinately. She wants to get her to poop at least
1 time/week. She has not lost any weight so she does not want
me to force feed every day to see what happens. I think she
saw the tears coming as I picked Beanie up and held her. I am
really upset about this. If this is the course she will take
I will euthanize before I let her get to this point.

She did say, in comparison to Beanie and Digit, that Digit
is a normal ig and Beanie does not act normal. I must say
that I love both my igs, but Beanie was my first and will
always be my favorite. I wish there was something I could do
for her.

Thanks for listening
Linda

I am so sorry to hear about Beanies diagnosis. You have done so much for her. I still think she will turn around and start eating. I know you won't give up on her. Did the vet say what could have been the cause other than previous neglect or abuse? I wish you and her the best of luck.

The vet just feels because of her old MBD. Beanie has
multiple old fractures of her arms and legs and her jaw
is very malformed. She said that when igs are young that
proper care is critical and if not provided, they start
to fade later because the problems catch up.

I feel that there is a mental problem as well as the vet
said that Beanie does not act like a normal ig. She is
not very active and does not move a whole lot. I must say
that she has seemed pretty happy after coming to live with
me but the vet says that her "very cooperative" behavior is
not normal. Beanie did fight her somewhat (tailwhipping)
but as soon as I took her she was fine. I have always wanted
to believe that I had finally developed her trust and she
felt safe. Now, it bothers me to know that it is just because
she is not healthy in some way

i belive that there is a mental problem with my igg as well my vet seems to think that as well. it really hurts to know that you cant help them. my igg was abused when it was yonger as well and now he is suffering because of there ignorance. Good luck with beanie

I am sorry to hear about your ig. I have two rescues and have grown to love them very much, they are free roamers in seperate rooms and could not imagine not being with them every day.
This is MontiMae, she I got when she was smaller, she is doing very well now. She is not aggressive either, but does roam around. Perhaps because she was gotten fairly young and has been loved a lot ever since.
Good luck with yours, I hope there is a happy ending.
