What to feed these hamsters? *URGENT*

rat_slayer Jun 18, 2003 05:53 AM

I've had a few hamsters in America. And i always fed them the hamster-diet stuff in the bag. But i've recently moved to a foreign country. I found a couple of hamsters and they dont have hamster chow here. So which fruits and vegetables are ok for them? Are there any i should avoid? and how about nuts and seeds? I would really apreciate all responses. Before i feed them something wrong. thank you.

Can you get wild bird mix? Dove/pigeon seed or something like that. Hamsters tend to be good seed eaters. I wouldn't go too heavy on the fresh fruits and veges or you may get wet tail.

The man i bought them from said he only fed them fruits and vegies like apples, carrots, and turnip greens and he said he never gave them any water because they derive enough water from the produce. He said hamsters dont need water. I thought he was ignorant about hamster care. But he said he's raised hamsters like this.
I'll look for some bird-seed, but it may not be available here. What are your opinions about that guy's meathods? I'd apreciate your input. thank you.

Well, I would have to ask, are they healthy? In the US it is so easy to get easier to feed foods that that is what you can go with. If the animals are used to the veges and fruits that is one thing. But if you took a seed eater and put it in with fruit and veges it would be sick. If he was reproducing them and they didn't look worn out and all then you could try it with animals from him. Just don't suddenly change a dry food eater to it. And I would provide water anyway.

I breed Dwarf Hamsters and I feed them premium dog food that contains no coloring, and cereal, bread, and nuts, seeds would be good too. I feed them veggies, lettuce and carrots, every three days, they love carrots.

I've been using newspaper as a substrate for the hamsters and they like to stuff their cheecks full of the newspaper and leave it in there for a really long time. And it gets all sogy. Could this be harmful for them?
