What happens to red-eared sliders in the winter up north? How do they avoid freezing to death?

They brumate (hibernate) in the bottom of ponds below the frost line.

Yea,

So much for being native to the South. They're adaptable in so many types of climates and habitats it's frightening. When I lived in New Jersey, I would've never thought I would see one basking on the same log as an Eastern painted, but they're there alright...and everywhere else.
