I'm so bloody confused!
I believed Raven to be male when I got him two years ago...now I am not sure. ???
This animal is at least 6 years old and has been through many homes. I just got him back in my care last month. (Long story, I gave him away when I thought I was moving, etc.) After seeing pairs of tree monitors at a reptile show, and your pics, I am confused now....males have a certain look to them, which I am just beginning to grasp? I don't think this animal has it...but it hasn't laid eggs either...and I don't know if rotten enclosures alone will prevent cycling?
Anyways, I have Raven back now, and committed to improving its life. He's my pet.
Whaddaya think?

I didn't know you had beccari. Here I thought you were just the BRN lady.

Now I see your just holding out on me (us). It is real easy to tell my pair apart. Does yours ever evert when picked up? Mine seem to both evert when I have to grab them up and clean the cage or change branches around. My male has a noticable bulge as well of course in my pictures you can see the difference in heads.

About yours not laying, not all lone females will lay, not all paired females will lay. Out of all the monitors I own my beccari is probly the best at absorbing. I have a hard time telling when she is ovulating.

My guess is since you have seen male monitors if you can tell the sex by looking yours is probly a female. Unless of course it is the dreaded he/she.

Keep the pictures coming, I enjoy seeing what everyone else has.

When I first got him, he did evert partly, and I recall thinking what was there was 'big' compared to the monitor itself. So I thought, 'male'.
Now, I am aware that some females of various species can pack quite a bundle. And confuse people. So I am not a fan of staring at bulges (ooo-that just came out wrong!) and basing lizard gender on that.
Male monitors just seem to have a 'rough' look to their profiles (for lack of a better term), and I have been eyeing Raven with suspicion now that I have him back...
Thanks again for your photos!
Wait until I get my new monitors, they are nice...

Oh come on you know you like staring at bulges ( you like the stroodle don't you?) haha

Well your right it can be confusing, but when you see a males compared to the females it is easy to tell the difference IMO.
But if you get a partial evertion you may think your male is female. Guess thats not so easy haha

Anyways no worries you've got a nice black tree no matter what, I am sure you'll figure it out.

Can't wait to see your new waters, and anything else you feel like showing off

Not sure if I understand..but did you just call goannaman a 'stroodle'? Well, whatever, but I know I don't like the sounds of it. An important thing to remember is, generally, males are visually oriented, and females are, ..not. Having beauty inside makes the outside then noticeable. That is how it works for me, anyway...

I'm not getting waters! Heavans, no! Where would the rest of us ive?? hahahaha

No you said you do not stare at bulges. I said OH come on you know you like the stroodle. I meant stroodle as in that part of the gender making up the bulge.

Wow never thought I'd have to explain that one to a woman. haha

Ok well i thought since you had pic's of a water lately you were getting them, but I forgot you were only babysitting. My badd.

Hahahaha,
I'm not that dense, just sidestepping what you were getting at. Heh. You didn't get MY point, that just because I drool over one man, doesn't mean I like to stare at them all!
I'm just not that type of girl. Why else would I spend all my free time with a bunch of lizards and spiders? They are less headache than people. :D
Cheers

About your blacktrees cycling, they are the easiest of all monitors to tell(the whole group). All you have to do is let the female crawl between your fingers, you can very very easily feel the eggs. The combination of them having very large eggs and are very thin monitors, makes them easy. They normally have 3 to 5 eggs, they start just behind the shoulders and go down to the hips. They are aligned long wise. Good luck with them. FR

Thanks for the info. I'll have to give that a try. Sounds similar to my pythons.
