My Savannah Keeps throwing up!

Southrat777 May 28, 2004 03:02 PM

I have had him for about 2 months. And lately he has been throwing up some of his food. At first I thought it was just this one mouse that maybe was sick or ate bad food. But today it was a rat that I bread. Will someone please help me.
Thanx

How big is he? How large is the prey you're feeding? If the prey is to big for your sav it will regurgitate. If the prey is the proper size then i'd see a vet since it could be a number of things. What are your temps? I keep mine at a 85 degree ambient with a basking spot of 140 which is the temp of the rock directly below the heat lamp an not the air temp. I also keep a cool area of 78.9 degrees for thermoregulation. Post your temps and we'll take it from there but pls see a vet asap.

I don't have his temp's right now. He is in a temporary cage until it gets warmer outside where he has a bigger cage. The lamps on him are a normal 60 watt bulb and a 150 ceramic bulb. He has been basking in the direct light lately. I am wondering if he may be cold.

If I knew how to post a picture I would, but he is about two feet long.

thermometers and a rheostat of some sort so you can monitor the temps whether its in an temperary enclosure or not. Secondly you need to run out to the nearest hardware store and get yourself some flood lights for basking. Also if you dont already i reccomend having a large enough rock that the savs whole body can fit on or even a flat piece of wood. Wood may be better because you can build what is called a retes stack so that it can choose the temp that it prefers. You can find out more about the retes stack or even view a pic of it at Proexotics.com under their fact section. Thirdly if you've been keeping it this way all winter you need to know that what ever ailness your monitor has was caused by you because monitors need "specific" temps in order to thrive (i.e. digest food, fight off bacterias and parisites, and to have energy etc.) Forthly it needs some sort of dirt so it can burrow when and if it gets too hot and wants too cool down. You should also have a large enough water container for it to submerge its whole body into. Also get yourself a temp gun so you can monitor surface temps also because the basking site should be anywhere from 120 to 150 - you can get one at proexotics for 25 dollars and these temps can be acheived by moving your basking spot up or down which ever is necessary. You should have and ambient air temp of low to mid 80s and a cool side around 79-82. These are important things that must be done to keep your animal alive so get it to a vet and get your set up right it could mean life or death. I may have forgotten a few things so if you have any further questions please ask. Good luck

PS Even when you put it outside you still must monitor temps and everything i mentioned above still applys and be careful -many monitors die in outdoor enclosures.
