Spoiled Crickets???

funnyman527 May 28, 2004 03:59 PM

I want my dragon to have the healthiest food availible for him, so i'm gutloading my crickets 24/7, with lettuce, celery, oranges, and Gutload. Is this the best idea? or should i only give them food every so often???
I don't see any harm in it, but i just want to be sure.

No that would work fine, but if veggies is your choice for gutloading there are much better choices like colllard, dandelion greens, endive. Squash is also a great veggie for crickets cause they stay moist and fresh for a while, and last long in the fridge too. All of the above veggies are staple food choices for your beardies too. They are all great for moisture. I just bought some cricket food from cricketfood.com and so far so good the crickets love it, and it provides lots of nutrients/probiotics to the crickets. I also right before feeding the crix let them eat rep-cal pellets soaked in water for an hour or two. They eat so many pellets that when the dragon eats the crix all I see is the pellets in their mouths, and they eat and hold quite a lot of it in their guts.

I feed my crickets daily with the leftover greens and stems I don't feed my lizards. I give them moisture with orange, apple, or potato slices. They seem to thrive on this, and when my lizards bite into a fat cricket and green juice squirts out onto the paper towels, I know they're getting the good stuff.

the folks from sticky tongue (miner-all) make a gut load called Vit-all. Its a powder you just mix with water so it turns into a paste. It has lots of good stuff in it and if you have a picky BD, it seems to make the crix more apealing (at least my guys seemed to eat more when I use it).

FYI, while gut loading (especially hydrating)is beneficial, dusting delivers more nutrients as there is more surface area to cover on the outside of a cricket than the inside of their stomachs. I love the T-rex powder since it sticks to the crix so well. it also helps balance the phosphorus:calcium ratio.
