exactly how much should a 8 1/2 in dragon be eating

Cee4 May 28, 2004 04:14 PM

SHe has been so restless these last few days Im worried maybe im not feeding her properly. By exactly I mean how much as in 1TBL of greens and 15 1/2in crickets etc....It could be that I changed her subtrate from papertowels to nice pieces of slate. She has been pacing at the front window of her enclosure like crazy, back and forth. She is about 4mnth old. I feed her about 2tbls of greens and 20 1/2 crickets plus a around 5 mealies daily, split into two meals..I asked before if they could eat themselves to death because she can get soo fat looking..She poops daily largish poops. Anyway let me know exactly what I should be feeeding her. I also have pellets that I use when I run out of crickets on occasion, but they seem to pull the vegies out and leave the pellets.

I would encourage more veggies if she is eating them all. Make sure they are being dusted. I would cut back on the mealies. I would only feed those a couple times a week with maybe 5 at a time. The crickets are where you are probably under feeding. At that age and size they can eat up to 100 crickets daily. I would feed crickets at least twice a day and offer maybe 15-25 per feeding. If she will eat those within ten minutes then you can go higher. The growth rate they experience at that age requires a lot of protien. I have a little girl about 2 1/2 months old that is already 11" long. The mealies you are feeding are high in fat and could be attributed to her looking pudgy or fat. They should be considered a candy. Make sure your are supplementing and dusting the crickets and salads. On the other hand you don't have to feed crickets at all if you want to compensate for the protien through other sources. The above methods of feeding will only ensure that your dragon has all the needed nutrients to experience maximum growth potential. A big dragon that has been fed properly is a healthy dragon.

When you put your pellets in if you spray the salad and pellets with a spray bottle they will get sticky and stick to the greens better and more will get eaten by accident if your dragon is not a pellet eater.

There are several different brands of pellets. Some Beardies show a preference for different brands, sometimes you have to trick them to get them started. Put a large paper plate in the cage and bounce the pellets off it, drop them in one at a time. BDs are attracted by movement. You can also try soaking them in different juices (no sugar added) then bounce them in. Offer the pellets first thing before other foods about an hour after lights on and then again throughout the day. Don’t starve him if he won’t eat them but try for a few days with only offering pellets. You can also feed moisten pellets to the crix about 1 hour before you feed them to your BD. The scent of the pellets will get on them and he may learn to associate the smell.
