A book I have says weaning begins at 21 days, puberty begins at 50-60 days and breeding begins at 65-100 days. Good luck!

Your idea is very good. Getting adult, large, grown rats can end you with worn out breeders or animals too old to conceive or deliver live pups. Get some smalls and let them grow. They will end up with pups quicker than trying with older ones. Mine tend to breed around 10-12 wks. They can breed younger.

They can breed at 8 weeks for females and 6 weeks for males.
So if you buy from a store there probably only 4 weeks old which is the youngest that they can be removed from the mother, so if you buy from a store i would think that the wait would be around a month and a half after you buy them they will be able to reproduce.
But if your breeding rats never but them from a pet store they are kept in unhealthy conditions and not cared for properly, so i suggest contacting a breeder.
