need some advice on enclosure type and design

5hawn May 28, 2004 06:58 PM

Hi everyone. I need to build a decent looking rack system to accomodate 3 snakes and 1 leopard gecko. My 10 and 20 gallon tanks are taking up too much room so I would appreciate advice (no experience on this, but I am a cabinetmaker). I want to build a typical rack system out of wood with plastic containers. I dont like the idea of flex tape for heating so what if I allow a recess in the rear of the enclosure and put an adjustable light-bulb in the rear bottom to control heat on one end? (with vents on top of course). What is a good recommendation on distance of plastic container from bulb to prevent melting of plastic? Any help, ideas, or photos would be appreciated. By the way, if I dont build this soon, you know who is already asking around to give my snakes away. Thanks for your help, all my thanks in advance.

i don't understand what you have against flexwatt? the light bulb thing doesn't sound pratical to me.when would the snakes have a dark period? the channel in back would have a chimmney effect,as the heat naturally rises it would create a current upward, how would the snakes get warm? thousands of herpers use flexwatt because it works nicely.i built a rack that uses 12qt.,27qt. and 41qt.sterilite tubs,it's very versitile, what kind of snakes do you plan on housing and how many?
