For some reason I'm having severe issues with my outgoing E-mail. I can't send one at all...I can receive them but they won't send...it's driving me crazy. I'm trying to answer Fred Asbury, you, my daughter and several other people and they just keep stacking up in my inbox. Bellsouth bites....

Anyway..back to your questions.

Yep, I'm in Georgia.
Madagascan Hognose Snakes are Leioheterodon madagascariensis ssp.

Hope that helps...

so what is Leioheterodon modestus

oldherper Jun 18, 2003 08:44 AM

I've seen that one by a number of common names...Malagasay Blond Hognose, Blond Madagascar Hognose, Golden Hognose, Gold Hognose...I think the old taxonomy was Leioheterodon madagascarensis modestus, but I don't really remember for sure. A lot of animals have been reclassified in the past several years and many that were considered sub-species were found by DNA or other methods to not be closely related enough to be considered subspecies and were subsequently give separate species status if they remained in the same genus. In that case, they dropped the old species name and used the subspecies name in it's place in many instances.
