I have found this guy twice this year in a nearby pond run-off.He obviously had a traumatic shell injury in the past.He seems to have healed well and gets around great.

is that a mud turtle?
Where are you located? That must be a really old specimin, I can't put a finger on what that might be.

I had a painted turtle once that I chased a dog off of and it was bleeding from a 1/2" triangle of shell ripped out above it's head. The thing had had a terrible life as the rest of it's carapace didn't have a scale bigger than a sixth it's normal size...they were all scrambled like your guy. Amazing that they live through it. This one healed up...two years to cover the bone with shell.
